A site-specific version of Strandlines will be at this year’s Dumbo Arts Festival! Come see the waves move across a literal ton of sand 🙂

Dumbo Arts Festival 2014
1 Main Street, Festival Lounge, Brooklyn, NY 11201 (map)

Friday, Sept. 26 6:00pm to 9:00pm
Saturday, Sept. 27 12:00pm to 9:00pm
Sunday, Sept. 28 12:00pm to 6:00pm

No trip home to San Ramon is complete without visiting Bay Books and Dublin’s Half Price Books. Spring cleaning at my parent’s house resulted in four boxes filled with John Grisham, Michael Crichton, Jean Auel, and a lot of Black Stallion and Misty of Chincoteague. I traded them in for a set of Star Wars art books, Peter Max’s Land of Blue, Charley Harper: An Illustrated Life, Pushpesh Pant’s India: The Cookbook and The Essential Lenny Bruce.

some gallery shows that look interesting…

**revised 2/18/12**

Doug Wheeler @ David Zwirner
519 West 19th Street
thru February 25
One of Wheeler’s “infinity environments” – he plays with light and space so you lose all reference points, I got a bit of vertigo the first time I walked into one. There was a crazy long line when we went so I never got to try this show.

Zimoun @ Bitforms
529 West 20th Street
thru March 10
I usually stop at Bitforms every time I’m in Chelsea just to see what they’ve got going on. This time it looks like some sort of whirring motor installation. Fun!

Erik and Martin Demaine: Curved Crease Sculpture @ Guided by Invoices
558 West 21st Street
Thru March 3
Origami sculptures by father-and-son collaborators Martin and Erik Demaine. You might have seen them in the origami documentary Between the Folds.

Thomas Heatherwick @ Haunch of Venison
550 West 21st Street
Thru March 3
Designer/architect Thomas Heatherwick shows off some furniture extruded from single pieces of metal and a chair where you can literally sit and spin.

Weegee / Vivian Meier @ Steven Kasher
521 West 23rd Street
thru February 25

Ai Weiwei @ Mary Boone
541 West 24th Street
thru February 4
Ai Weiwei’s hand-painted porcelain sunflower seeds on view in NYC. Unfortunately, we can’t walk through them as the initial viewers at the Tate did due to toxic ceramic dust.

Tom Friedman: New Work @ Luhring Augustine
531 West 24th Street
thru March 17
Tom Friedman is a very meticulous man.

Paula Scheer @ Bryce Wolkowitz
505 West 24th Street
Thru February 18

James Nares @ Paul Kasmin
515 West 27th Street
thru February 11
I like the look of the black and white chronophotographs of a pendulum’s swing.
